India became the World Champions!!
India became the first nation to win the Champions Trophy three times after defeating New Zealand by 4 wickets in today's final.
India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, showcasing an exceptional performance to claim the title. Previously, in 2002, India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners.
India secured its second title in 2013. Meanwhile, New Zealand, the 2004 champions, fell short of winning their second title this time.
Chasing a target of 252 runs, India secured victory in 49 overs, losing 6 wickets.
At the Dubai International Stadium, India got off to a fantastic start. Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill built a century partnership, putting pressure on New Zealand’s bowlers.
Rohit smashed a crucial half-century, scoring 50 off 41 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. Shubman Gill, who scored 31 runs, was the first wicket to fall, dismissed by Mitchell Santner.
Soon after, the experienced Virat Kohli was dismissed for just 1 run off his second ball, trapped LBW by Michael Bracewell.
Set batsman Rohit was then sent back to the pavilion by Rachin Ravindra. He played a brilliant knock of 76 runs off 83 balls, hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes. By the time India lost its third wicket, the score was 122 runs.
After that, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel built a 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Shreyas narrowly missed his half-century, getting out for 48 runs, while Axar Patel contributed 29 runs before heading back to the pavilion.
KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya guided India to victory. During this phase, KL was dismissed for 18 runs by Kyle Jamieson via a caught-and-bowled. However, Rahul remained unbeaten on 34 runs, successfully leading India to the win.
In the bowling department, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell took two wickets each.
Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, New Zealand put up a fighting total of 251 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs.
Will Young and Rachin Ravindra provided a steady start with a 57-run opening partnership. However, after Young was dismissed for 15 runs, New Zealand kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Rachin was bowled by Kuldeep Yadav after scoring 37 runs.
Shortly after, Kuldeep Yadav struck again, dismissing captain Kane Williamson for just 11 runs with a caught-and-bowled dismissal. At 75 runs with three wickets down, New Zealand struggled to build momentum. Tom Latham was also dismissed for 14 runs.
Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips tried to stabilize the innings with a 57-run stand for the fifth wicket. Phillips contributed 34 runs before getting out. Meanwhile, Mitchell and seventh-order batter Michael Bracewell both managed to score half-centuries.
Mitchell played 101 balls and scored the highest runs for New Zealand with 63. Meanwhile, Bracewell remained unbeaten on 53 runs, facing 40 balls and hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes.
In the bowling department, Kuldeep Yadav delivered an economical spell, taking 2 wickets while conceding 40 runs in his 10 overs. Varun Chakravarthy also bowled 10 overs, picking up 2 wickets for 45 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami took one wicket each.
India advanced to the semifinals as the winner of Group ‘A,’ while New Zealand progressed as the runner-up from the same group. In the semifinals, India defeated Australia, and New Zealand secured a spot in the final by beating South Africa.
