Australia reached the Championship Trophy semifinals after 16 years.
Australia has reached the semifinals after 16 years. The team, which won the title in 2009, failed to win any matches in the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy editions.
In Lahore, Pakistan, while chasing a target of 274 runs, Australia made a strong start. They had scored 109 runs for the loss of one wicket in 12.5 overs when rain interrupted the match.
Travis Head remained unbeaten on 59, while Steve Smith was not out on 19. Matt Short was dismissed after scoring 20 runs.
Earlier, after winning the toss and batting first, Afghanistan posted a total of 273 runs, losing all wickets in 50 overs.
Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah played crucial half-century innings. Sediqullah scored 85 runs off 95 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes. Azmatullah contributed 67 runs off 63 balls, including one four and five sixes.
Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 20, opener Ibrahim Zadran made 22, Rashid Khan added 19, and Rahmat Shah scored 12. The other players failed to reach double digits.
For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis took three wickets, while Spencer Johnson and Adam Zampa picked up two each. Nathan Ellis and Glenn Maxwell grabbed one wicket each.
With Afghanistan still holding a slim mathematical chance from Group B, the semifinal lineup will be finalized after the match between England and South Africa.
If South Africa wins Saturday’s game, they will top the group. Even if England secures a narrow victory, South Africa will still advance to the semifinals. However, Afghanistan’s hopes will remain alive only if England achieves a massive win.
From Group A, New Zealand and India have already secured their spots in the semifinals, while Pakistan and Bangladesh have been eliminated from the tournament.
