Pakistan's defeat against New Zealand
New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 60 runs in the first match of the Champions Trophy.
Chasing a target of 321 runs, Pakistan was bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs. Khushdil Shah top-scored with 69 runs, while opener Babar Azam contributed 64 runs. Salman Agha added 42 runs.
For New Zealand, William O'Rourke and captain Mitchell Santner each took 3 wickets, while Matt Henry claimed 2 wickets, and Nathan Smith took 1.
Earlier, New Zealand, inspired by centuries from openers Will Young and Tom Latham, posted a total of 320 runs for 5 wickets. Latham remained not out on 118 runs, facing 104 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes. He completed his 8th ODI century in 95 balls.
Young made 107 runs off 113 balls, including 12 fours and 1 six. This was his 4th ODI century, achieved in 107 balls. Latham and Glenn Phillips shared a 125-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Phillips scored 61 runs off 39 balls, hitting 3 fours and 4 sixes. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell each scored 10 runs, while Kane Williamson was dismissed for just 1 run.
For Pakistan, Naseem Shah took 2 wickets, while Abrar Ahmed and Haris Rauf each claimed 1 wicket.
Since the Indian team will not travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, India will play all their matches in the UAE.
The top 8 teams from the 2023 ODI World Cup, held two years ago in India, will participate in the Champions Trophy. The teams are divided into two groups. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand are in Group 'A'.
Australia, Afghanistan, England, and South Africa make up Group 'B'. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals, and the final will be held on the 25th of Falgun (March 9th).
